Is Your Workplace Prepared for a Potential Disaster?

Businesses face a variety of natural and man-made hazards: tornados, flu epidemics, power failures, and acts of violence to name a few. September was officially named “Disaster Preparedness Month” by the federal government in 2004 as a time to raise awareness about the need to be prepared at home, at work, and community-wide. We are reminded every time a natural disaster makes the news that we should have a plan for our family. Children practice drills at school for fires, bus crashes, lockdowns and more. Our local governments and volunteer groups work together to plan for local emergencies. What about at work? Are you taking steps to keep your business and your team safe? You have worked hard to build your business, investing a lot of time, money, and passion. A disaster could wipe it all away. It seems natural to take steps to protect your business but is often an activity that is brushed aside by more pressing daily needs. According to FEMA, 25% of businesses do not reopen...

Are You Too Busy for Your Ideal Life?

Overwhelmed. Busy. So much to do. Do it yesterday. I could go on. There is so much competing for our time and attention many of us feel obligated to immediately reply to all requests that come our way. We feel pressure to meet the demands of everyone around us at the expense of our health, well-being, and intimate relationships. According to a 2013 survey by Wrike, 88% of men and 85% of women regularly work overtime. So many of us are telling ourselves that texts, emails, and phone calls must be answered right away. If you don’t answer, that loyal client or juicy prospect will just hire someone else. Replying to that Saturday or Sunday email can’t wait until Monday morning. Never mind that the person who sent it was doing some catch-up and won’t be checking their email again until Monday afternoon. The irony is that a plethora of articles have been published over the last few years with tips on how to be successful from top executives and CEO’s. I don’t recall se...

Three Ways to Keep Your Day on Track

“How did it get so late so soon?” – Dr. Seuss You have the perfect day planned. You are ready to conquer the world. Your priorities are scheduled for the time of day you are most productive; meetings are confirmed and the information you need for them is pulled and ready to go. And, somehow, you have lost track of time and are now running behind and desperately trying to catch up to get your day back on track. Even when we start the day with everything planned, there is the repeated possibility that things can go off track. How do we stop that from happening? Unless there is a true emergency or something that really is out of your control, you usually can manage your time with intentionality and discipline.            Set a timer. Relying on your natural clock or glancing at the clock on occasion to keep you on-schedule is risky. When we are engrossed in something, time can slip away. You can go from having ten minutes left and then realiz...
